PRACTICAL LIFE
The exercises of Practical Life provide the foundation for all other activities in our Montessori classroom. They foster independence in daily living using materials that refine skills such as pouring, cleaning, sewing, food preparation, hammering, opening/closing, twisting, gardening, grace and courtesy.
Refining these 21st century skills will enhance a child’s motor control and coordination of movement, development of concentration, and the self-esteem that comes with being able to independently master his or her environment. Developing practical life skills prepares children to engage in cradle to career skills such as reading, language, math and other academic exercises.
Examples of Practical Life materials include:
-
- Pitchers
- Funnels
- Cups, Bowls & Dishes
- Spoons, Scoops & Ladles
- Tongs & Chopsticks
- Basins & Buckets
- Towels & Sponges

SENSORIAL
From birth to approximately age six, children are highly focused on the sensory impressions they receive from their environment. They use this information to explore and make sense of the greater world around them.
We provide a careful selection of items with different textures, colors, sizes, and geometric shapes to help children discover relationships using skills such as matching, sorting, grading, classifying, and sequencing. These skills indirectly prepare students for future exploration of math, language, geometry, art and music.
Examples of Sensorial materials include:
-
- Visuals – knobbed cylinders, knobless cylinders, block towers, long rods, geometric solids
- Tactile – rough and smooth boards

LANGUAGE
Words are used as labels for our experiences; thus, every classroom is designed to provide students with a rich and varied experience that encourages a well-rounded means of expression. The transition to reading and writing depends on a strong vocabulary that, in turn, depends on the child’s experiences. Through language and exploration, children are able to express thoughts and understand and interpret the thoughts of others.
Examples of Language materials include:
